A few days ago, a friend and I installed a convex mirror on the corner where the Somerville Community Path crosses School Street:
With just a little effort, we gave folks a way to see around this formerly-blind corner. It felt great to do, and feedback from fellow Somerville residents has been extremely positive.
I’m pleased with what we accomplished with such a small intervention. The mirror definitely helps! However, the School Street crossing is still dangerous. (For details of why it’s dangerous and how it came to be this way, see this video I recorded a few days before installing the mirror).
And thus, we are not done.
On Wednesday June 18th, 2025 at 7pm, I’ll be hosting the first meeting of a group of citizens who are organizing to get the School Street crossing fixed for good.
(It’s gonna be a whole thing–I’m already expecting 15 folks!)
This project won’t be easy, but the current design is widely used, unambiguously dangerous, and deeply unpopular. I think we’ve got a real shot at getting a significant change pushed through.
If you’re willing to help tackle this project, please read the event guidelines and RSVP.
Together, we can turn this dangerous intersection into something that actually works for everyone.
